Membership Renewal

This year renewal has changed and needs to be by debit or credit card. You can do this by phone (freephone 0808 802 8080) or by going to www.britishlegion.org.uk/renewal and following the instructions. Note that you will have been sent a new membership number by post and need to use it.

If you are not a member yet then you can also join at the club in Sea Road, East Preston and enjoy the many activities the club offers, and you do not need to have been a member of the services. Membership is not just for ServiceMen or Women past or present, it's open to everyone, just contact the club for an application form.

Members should check that the club subscription of £7 has been paid with the Branch Payment. If not this can be paid at the club bar and you will receive a yellow sticker.

Application forms to join are available at the club bar. Just ask a member of the bar staff who will be happy to help.

PASSCHENDAELE CETENARY COMMEMORATIONS

On the 31st July 1917 the Battle Of Passchendaele began and this bloody battle continued until 10th of November which resulted in 300,000 British casualties alone. It is calculated that one British or Commonwealth soldier died for every two inches gained.

East Preston lost two of their own;

Private Gordon William Cheal, Machine Gun Corps who was killed 16th August who is burried in Potijze Chateau Cemetery and Lance Corporal George Edmund Glinister, Royal Sussex Regiment who died in action 24th September and has no known grave and he is remembered on the walls of Tyn Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the world.

These men will always be remembered, but they would not want it to be all gloom and doom so the afternoon of Saturday 29th July saw the commemoration by celebration for them and all of East Preston's "Fallen" hero's. It was also an opportunity to celebrate the Club's 70th Anniversary which was founded in 1947.

An afternoon of Jazz and the ever popular meat raffle was well supported including by those not members who were welcomed to see what the club has to offer to people of all ages.

The club is also home of our British legion Branch who are the first port of call for our local veterans and their dependents who may need assistance from the Royal British Legion whose sole purpose since 1921 is to support our veterans and dependents.

It's what we're here for so if you know of an old soldier in need please do not hesitate to contact us.

THE BLUE BISHOPS play at the club on February 27th and recently on September 24th.

The Blue Bishops, through their hard-edged rhythm ‘n’ blues rock music, have built a reputation both for their studio albums and live performances.
